The three most memorable details of our trip to Berlin were, in this order, 1. Curry Wurst, 2. Curry Wurst, 3. Curry Wurst. Oh I’m kidding, kind of. 1. Curry Wurst, 2. the Berlin Wall, 3. We didn’t pay for public transportation once. We also saw an ad for a free tour of the city on a pamphlet in our hostel and decided to check it out—if it was lame, we could bail.
The tour ended up being incredible. We learned so much about the city, things we would have never known, or even known to go to, had it not been for the tour (and our hot, hot tour guide who held my attention).
This is a section of the Berlin Wall that is still standing. Incredibly humbling to stand at this piece of history and realize how lucky we are to live in the land of the free. How lucky we are, as Americans, to have never known such a bondage.
My ugly tennis shoes are standing on the parking lot above the bunker that Hitler took refuge in. This was one of the locations that I never would have known about had it not been for the tour. There were no signs, nothing on the maps, just a vacant parking lot hiding a huge piece of world history.
A pretty building.
This was a very unique Holocaust memorial site in the city.
And, drum roll please, a food unique to Berlin, CURRY WURST. I cannot explain it to you, it is just incredible and a food that I crave and miss weekly. We’re going to attempt to make it soon, and I’m hoping that it will at least compare. For my sanity’s sake.
Berlin was a fantastic city. I’ll always remember that no one ever checked tickets on the buses (HOLLA), grubbin’ on curry wurst, and touring the city. It was a good, good day to be in Germany.
