Germany, in three parts: Rothenburg

_MG_8166

Breana and I were a perfect pair for backpacking Europe. We fed off of each others sense of spontaneity and adventure. I knew that if I was thinking of mixing up our route, or going somewhere in Rick Steves’ “Best of Europe” book last minute, she would be excited for the possibility.

And so on a night train from Interlaken, Switzerland to Munich, Germany, we decided to instead go to the village of Rothenburg. When the train stopped in Munich, we immediately checked for connecting trains to Rothenburg and hopped aboard less than half an hour later.

Rothenburg did not disappoint.

When we stepped off the train, we walked aimlessly until we stumbled onto the City Square. The most precious, stereotypical European city square.

Much to our delight, Rothenburg had a Christmas village. We wandered through the glorious Christmas shops, lugging around our huge backpacks, running our fingers across tiny glass hand painted ornaments.

And much to our taste-buds’ delight, the village was famous for a dessert called “schneeballen”—basically, fried donut scraps, dipped in powdery sugar, cinnamon, chocolate, or all three. My love language.

We were only able to spend a few hours in Rothenburg, but our love for Germany flourished on it’s tiny brick streets. It was the best last-minute decision we made on our backpacking adventure!

I’m sure Munich would have been cool, but hey, we’ll never know what we missed, only what we gained.
